I'm really thankful for the opportunity that this country has given me. I really escaped from prison: Fidel Castro's Cuba. There is no freedom to leave, there is no freedom to improve your life or to change your situation because everything is controlled. You have to work--everyone has to work for the government. I spent thirty-three years working for the government earning 348 pesos a month in Cuba, which is about fifteen dollars here in the United States. I had to give my daughters shoes, food, everything, and I couldn't do anything. I wanted to fix my house and I couldn't do it. It's really a difficult situation materially. Everything is needed. Yes, the education is free, the health care is free, but you couldn't buy a pair of shoes. I, as a father, couldn't give them anything.

So after living fifty years in need of everything in Cuba--because all these needs cause problems: in your marriage, with the children, in your personal life. And here, if my daughter tells me, "Papi, I need a pair of shoes," I send them to her. If she needs 20 pesos, I send it. This is natural because that's how life is. A father should give to his children. So now, even though I can't be there to kiss my daughter, I feel like a good father because I can support my daughters, my grandson, and everyone in Cuba. So in this sense I feel more successful, which is the right and the duty of any father.

I did gardening, construction, and in this way I started to send a little money to Cuba. I taught karate classes, cardio classes. I've worked part time in different places. I worked in the JCC, in Salve Regina University, through a friend of mine. They paid me to teach a workshop about Cuban religion. I've taught classes with CHISPA. I also worked at Sodexo. I was a janitor. I cleaned the classrooms. I've worked hard, you understand, because I'm here in the United States and I want to organize my life, but I came at an advanced age. I'm not fifteen years old. I came when I was fifty-two and now I'm fifty-six, you know? The most difficult thing has really been the language because learning English at fifty years of age in this country is not easy.

I'd like to become a citizen to strengthen my status here in the United States, because as a citizen you have more rights, like any American citizen. This is the opportunity that this country gives you. This is a country of opportunities. Everyone comes here because here you can enjoy freedom. This is the difference between the United States and Cuba. In Cuba you have benefits, but you are immobile. Here I teach classes, I'm opening a business on my own initiative. I can do things free of control because in Cuba they are afraid of anyone making money. And nobody can improve their life because they are just looking for the basic necessities. That is the difference.

Estoy muy agradecido por la posibilidad que me brinda en este pais. Y verdaderamente, me escapé de la carcel de Fidel Castro en Cuba. No hay libertad para salir, no hay libertad para tu defender tu vida o decir yo quiero cambiar mi situación porque todo está regulado. Tú tienes que trabajar, todo el mundo tiene que trabajar para el gobierno. Yo llevaba treinta y tres años trabajando para el gobierno ganando un salario de tres cientos cuarenta y ocho pesos en Cuba que son alrededor de quince dólares aquí en Estados Unidos [mensual], teniendo que darle a mis hijas zapatos, comida, todo, y no tenía posibilidad de hacer nada. Queriendo arreglar mi casa y no podia hacer nada. Entonces es verdaderamente una situación material tan difícil, todo era necesidad – si la educación era gratis, y la salud era gratis, pero no podía ayudarlas materialmente. No podía comprarles un par de zapatos. Yo, como papá, no podía darles nada.

Entonces yo, despues de vivir cincuenta años de necesidades de todo en Cuba, porque todas esas necesidades traen problemas matrimoniales, con los hijos, de tu persona, de todo. Y aquí, que yo, si mi hija me dice “Papi necesito un par de zapatos,” se lo mando. Si necesita veinte pesos se lo mando. Entonces ahora, porque eso es natural por eso es la vida, es asi. El padre tiene que darle a los hijos. Entonces yo, ahora, verdaderamente me siento, independientemente de que no puedo darle un beso a mi hija me siento como un buen padre porque puedo apoyar a mis hijas, a mi nieto y a todo el mundo que esta en Cuba. Y entonces ahora me siento más logrado en ese sentido que es el derecho y el deber que pueda tener cualquier persona como papá.

He hecho de jardinero, de constructor, y eso empezé a mandar mi dinerito para Cuba lo que me ganaba por la calle y asi sucesivamente fue como empezé a mandar dinero para Cuba. Di clases de karate, di clases de cardio. He ido conseguiendo “part time” en diferentes lugares. Trabajé en JCC, en Salve Regina University; a través de una amiga mia me pagaron allí, fue una especie de taller de la religión cubana, ahi cogí mi dinerito. He dado clases con CHISPA. Además de eso, tambien trabajé en Sodexo. Yo fui conserje. Limpié las aulas. He trabajado duro, entiendes? Aqui para poder empezar a organizar la vida ya que estoy aqui en Estados Unidos, porque verdaderamente me quedé pero yo vine con una edad avanzada. No tengo quince años. Llegué aqui con 52 años y ya hoy cumplí 56, entiendes? Y he tratado, en lo que más he tenido dificultad aqui es verdaderamente con el idioma porque venir a aprender inglés a los 50 años aqui en este pais no es fácil.

Me gustaría ser ciudadano para fortalecer mi estatus aqui en Estados Unidos y porque como ciudadano tengo mas derechos. Como cualquier ciudadano norteamericano para organizar mi vida económicamente como todas personas porque ese es la oportunidad que vine a este pais porque este pais da… este es un pais de oportunidades. Todo el mundo viene para aca porque aqui se goza de la libertad, que esa es la diferencia que hay con Cuba. En Cuba tu tienes beneficios, pero estas inmóvil. Porque aqui yo doy clases, estoy abriendo un negocio, estoy tratando de crear de hacer de abrir mi negocio con mis propias iniciativas. Puedo hacer cosas libre de un control desde punto de vista de que en Cuba se teme de que una persona se enriquezca y nadie se va a enriquecer buscándose la manera de sustantarse por uno mismo, entiende? Entonces esa es la diferencia.
