The political situation in Cuba, as everyone knows, Fidel Castro triumphed in his revolution in 1959. His ideals were good. He solved many of the problems that existed in Cuba at that time: illiteracy, he gave rights to women, he eliminated all the crimes of the previous dictatorship, because you have to realize that before the revolution they committed many crimes, they did many very bad things. The government that existed was not a serious government. Fidel erradicated all these things. He erradicated, for the most part, racial discrimination, and so on. This was the good part. He distributed the wealth among the poor, he tried to give them a better social outlook. This was really excellent.

What happened is that when a person spends so much time commanding, it changes his way of thinking, and this is what happened. In protecting the revolution, he turned it into a dictatorship because everything was controlled. They knew everything about your life. There was an organization called “Committee of the Defense of the Revolution.” Its objective was to protect and maintain the revolution, but it controlled the country too much. In time there were no elections. Castro remained the leader, but everything was under his direction, and he really turned into a dictator. Because in Cuba you can’t do anything if it’s not under the direction of the government. The TV is not private. Everything is directed top-down by the government. The rules are good, but also extreme, and all extremes are bad.

So as a result of these same regulations, Cuba found itself limited. Cuba found itself in the world as a country with a dictator. And at the same time there was a really tense situation because after 1989-90 Socialism was destroyed [in Europe] and Cuba remained alone, as the only socialist country in Latin America, and the blockade against Cuba became worse, and every day it got stronger, more destructive. The situation in Cuba was very bad, the people returned to the Stone Age, and as a result there was a massive exodus in the 1990s because the people were desperate because of the economic situation that existed.

La situación política en Cuba, como todo el mundo conoce, Fidel Castro triunfó en su revolución en el año 1959. Los ideales de él realmente fueron buenos, solucionó muchos problemas que había en Cuba en aquel momento: el analfabetismo, le dió derecho a la mujer, eliminó todos los crímines que había de la dictadura anteriormente porque verderamente y hay que reconocer que antes del triunfo de la revolución se cometían muchos crímenes, se hicieron muchas cosas muy malas. El gobierno que era no era un gobierno serio. Fidel erradicó todas esas cosas. Erradicó en gran medida parte de la discriminación racial, y asi sucesivamente. Esa es la parte buena, que se solucionó y le dió las riquezas o sea distribuyó las riquezas entre los pobres, le dió oportunidad a la gente pobre o sea trató de darle un matiz social mejor. Eso fué muy excelente.

Lo que sucede es que cuando una persona se pasa tanto tiempo mandando ya cambia su forma de pensar, entonces eso es lo que pasó. Ya él producto en el sentido el proteger la revolución, él verdaderamente se convirtió eso en una dictadora, porque todo estaba controlado. En cada cual a una organización que sabe la vida y milagros de cómo tu vives, independientemente de que se hizo con el objectivo en aquel momento para proteger la revolución, porque asi era que se llamaba Comité de Defensa de la Revolución, pero esa misma organización se convertió en un control de todo el mundo. Asi con el objectivo de proteger y mantener la revolución él reguló demasiado al pais. Y con el tiempo nunca hubo elecciones, él se mantuvo como lider, todo fue bajo de la dirección de él y verdaderamente se convertió, para no alargar más la historia, en un dictador. Porque en Cuba no se puede mover nada si no es bajo la orientación del gobierno. La television no es privada. Todo es del gobierno, todo es dirigido verticalmente por el gobierno. Las regulaciones son buenas, pero tampoco los extremos, todos los extremos son malos.

Entonces eso es lo que trajo como consecuencia, producto de esa misma situación de regulaciones Cuba se vió limitada, Cuba se vió en el mundo como un país con una dictadura. Y al mismo tiempo fue una situación bastante tensa porque ya después del año 1989-1990 ya el campo Socialista se destruye, Cuba queda sola, como un único país Socialista en América Latina y el bloqueo contra Cuba arrreció y fue cada día más fuerte, más penetrante, más destructor. La situación en Cuba fue pésima, la gente volvió otra vez a la edad de piedra, y eso trajo como consecuencia que hubo un éxodo masivo en los años noventa porque la gente ya estaba desesperada por la situación económica que había.
